Wuhan to Anlu 110km
28.03.2012
Back on the road again today despite my friends insistence that I could stay longer.
I also have to make the most of this lovely weather we are experiencing at the moment. I think it might be a touch premature to pack away the rain gear but it does look as though spring is on its way.
The flat land continues too and it was a fairly leisurely 110km to Anlu. Finding my way out of Wuhan proved a little tough and involved me riding along a road parallel to the ring road. However after a few kilometers this road; which was higher up came to an abrupt end at a junction. The road continued over on the other side but the problem was there was no bridge connecting the two of them. This was my cue to carefully push the bike down the side of a hill and carry it over a fence; not the easiest of maneuvers but one which I successfully navigated.
There are minor changes in the scenery; as I previously mentioned it’s a lot flatter. However for the most part it’s still the same as before; countryside, development and small towns. It’s not the picture perfect postcard I’m sure some people have when they imagine riding through the Chinese countryside.
It was really good to be out of the city again. Although the air in the countryside and on the busy 316 road was also polluted it was nothing compared to Wuhan. I used to like riding in cities but that was back in the day when I wasn’t riding a fully loaded touring bike.
Once in Anlu I went about the now customary routine of finding a hotel, going to the supermarket and buying supplies before heading back to the room to write this blog and watch a movie. My stomach has once again been playing up. I can’t really put my finger on it. I suppose that I had a routine in my every day life. I cooked a lot at home and rarely ate out; now I don’t really have a choice. The last few days in Wuhan were spent mostly eating Western food so the old stomach probably doesn’t really know what’s going on. One minute local Chinese cuisine the next we’re back on the Western stuff. Staying in Wuhan also gave me the chance to stock up on pasta so I was able to boil up some of that for tonight’s dinner.
Well not a lot else to report, I plan to get an early start tomorrow, Xi’an is in sight only another 730km to go.
